Injuries to the hamstring muscles are extremely common in all levels of athletic competition.
In the NFL, hamstring injuries are the 2nd highest reported injury behind knee sprains over the last 10 years.
Early recognition and appropriate management of hamstring injuries, followed by a proper return to activity, are pertinent to improve functional outcomes and help prevent future injuries.
A hamstring injury occurs when you strain or pull one of your hamstring muscles β the group of three muscles that run along the back of your thigh and end just below the knee joint.
The three hamstring muscles include:
π The semitendinosus
π The semimembranosus
π The biceps femoris
Hamstring injuries are frequent in all sport that involves sprinting with sudden stops and starts.
To help prevent hamstring injuries, always warm up and stretch before going game speed.
