Different shaped feet need different shared shoes. The importance of a shoe last is one of the most overlooked aspects of buying and wearing shoes. Incorrect shoe size and curvature or “last” may be the cause of foot pain! It is estimated that 9%-30% of the world’s population experience foot pain.
An important factor to consider is the “last” of the shoe”. The last is the shaped form in which a shoe is built around. Lasts may be straight, curved, or semi-curved. The curvature of the shoe should match the curvature of the shoe. You are able to determine the correct last for you by measuring 3 points along the bottom of your foot; the midpoint of your foot’s ball (base of the big toe to the base of the little toe), the midpoint of the mid-section of the foot and the midpoint of the heel.
- Using these points, do you notice a large curvature, medium curvature, or a nearly straight line? This is the correct shape of the “last” for your feet! A proper “last” can reduce unwanted pressure and movement within your shoe to protect your foot.
